Author-Guided Expeditions with BKKDEV

Small-group journeys led by passionate explorers who show you Asia’s culture and nature in the deepest way.
Most tours in Asia are big buses , fixed schedules , photo stops at the same viewpoints everyone else hits. BKKDEV expeditions are different. They are small , usually four to eight people max , led by locals or long-time residents who dont just know the place , they live it. These arent professional guides reading from scripts , they are writers , photographers , former monks , marine biologists , people who have spent years wandering these paths and want to share what really matters. The focus is depth over distance , real conversations , off-schedule moments and places you wont find in any app.
We run a handful of these each season , always limited spots so it stays intimate. Here are the kinds of journeys we offer right now , and what makes them feel different.
1. Northern Thailand Hill Tribe Trails & Tea Mountains
Led by a Chiang Rai-based ethnobotanist who grew up in a Lahu village. Three days walking through misty hills , staying in family homes , learning how wild tea is foraged and fermented the old way. Visit small Akha ceremonies if the timing lines up , pick herbs for dinner , sit around fires hearing stories in broken English and hand gestures. No luxury lodges , just real village life and sunrise over ridges nobody else reaches.
2. Cambodian Jungle Temples Beyond Angkor
A Khmer archaeologist friend leads this one , someone who worked on restoration projects for years. Four days exploring Beng Mealea , Koh Ker and remote prasats on foot and moto. Sleep in simple guesthouses near the ruins , eat with local families , learn about spirit worship still happening in these places. Its slow , sweaty , full of silence broken only by birds and your own questions.
3. Southern Thai Island Hopping by Local Long-Tail
Run by a former dive instructor from Trang who now focuses on conservation. Five days moving between hidden islands like Koh Ngai , Koh Mook and Koh Kradan. Snorkel reefs at dawn before boats arrive , camp on empty beaches one night , help locals check sea turtle nests if season allows. Meals are fresh catch grilled over fire , stories about ghost nets and coral bleaching shared over Chang beers.
4. Hanoi Backstreets & Rural Red River Delta
A Hanoi-born food writer and her cousin lead this. Starts in the alleys with dawn pho runs , then heads out by bike and boat to craft villages and floating markets. Stay in homestays , learn to roll spring rolls with grandmas , paddle through lotus fields at sunrise. Its less about sights , more about tastes , smells and the rhythm of daily life away from the lake.
5. Borneo Rainforest & Indigenous Longhouse Stay
Guided by a Dayak descendant who returned to his community after university. Six days trekking secondary forest , staying in a longhouse , learning blowpipe basics , foraging for wild edibles , listening to oral histories at night. No zoos or animal shows , just quiet observation of how people and jungle coexist today.
6. Japanese Countryside Onsen & Shrine Trails
A Kyoto-raised photographer who now lives in rural Kyushu leads small groups to lesser-known hot springs and mountain shrines. Walk ancient pilgrim paths , soak in outdoor baths fed by natural springs , eat kaiseki made with foraged ingredients. Its meditative , slow , with lots of time for quiet reflection and tea.
What ties them all together
- Groups capped at eight , often smaller.
- No forced shopping stops or rushed itineraries.
- Meals mostly local , home-cooked or street-style.
- Guides share personal stories , not memorized facts.
- Flexible days , if something interesting comes up we detour.
- Focus on respect , leave-no-trace , supporting small communities.
- Price includes most things but keeps it fair for everyone involved.
These expeditions they sell out fast because once people go they tell their friends. Its not about checking boxes , its about coming back changed a little , with memories that dont fit in a photo album.
If one of these calls to you , drop us a message with which region interests you most. We keep a short waitlist and open new dates when guides are ready.
